Hunt gained recognition for his innovative work in developing protective equipment and is noted for being "the first trainer to use fiberglass to help prevent serious injuries." In 1951, he was honored as Trainer of the Year by the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame, and in 1957, he was elected as the president of the National Athletic Trainers Association. He retired in July 1968 at the age of 65. In 1999, he died at the age of 95 and was interred at Saint Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Ann Arbor.
